'[The] rescue gave us the wrong cat': Feline pawrent realizes 1.5 years later that the cute kitty she adopted is actually not her cat

Good meowrning, fellow hoomans and cat pawrents. We can't imagine ever mixing up our cats. To us, they're all purrfectly unique. We could identify them if you blindfolded us, spun us around ten times, and then put us in a room filled with 100 other cats. We like to think we could, anyway. But in reality, if you put one of our cats next to one of their siblings, we might not be able to tell them apart if it were a real expurriment.

In the thread below, you'll meet a feline pawrent and the cute cat they adopted. They went in knowing exactly which cat they wanted, and left with what they thought was their cat. Fast forward 1.5 meowgnificent years of love and care, and after looking through some old photos, they realized that their cat looked different than the pictures at the rescue shelter!   • Wow, you have to look really close to see a difference. Like, really, really, really close. But, like the commenters are saying, there are no accidents when it comes to the cat distribution system. They were meant to have this cat, and not the other one.

    One and a half years ago we applied for a cat, Rubble. I just realized after looking at pictures that they gave us his brother. It may not be as obvious to anyone else but I can immediately tell my cat's grumpy face when you pick him up like in the last picture. I'm so attached to him I can't imagine having a different cat in his place.

    TiBun 10h ago When I adopted my boy, I was actually expecting to adopt his sister, but when I got to the foster home, his sister decided she'd escape the kitten room instead of meeting me more, and my boy was like "pick me instead" and so I did. No regrets, he's such a sweetheart. We end up with the cat that's right for us, even if it's not according to plan.

    utoxin 9h ago • Many years ago, when I was first married, we decided to get a kitty. So we went to the shelter to check out what options they had. We picked a young-ish male, who seemed friendly and energetic. But they told us we needed to bring a permission note from our landlords. We said we would be back the next day, and they said they would hold the kitty for us.

    We got back the next day with the note... and found that they hadn't recorded that he was claimed, and had adopted him out to somebody else. We were rather upset. To the point that they waived all adoption fees, and said we could have a different kitty almost for free.

    Reluctantly, we went through the cages again... and found a quiet dark brown tabby boy who hadn't interacted with us much the day before. But he seemed friendly enough, so we ended up taking him. Best. Cat. Ever.

    He was perfectly behaved, friendly, talkative, settled right in and owned the home, and spent the next 15 years being the boss of the house, and all the kitties that we got after him. No such thing as "the wrong cat".

  • The CDS works in meowsterious ways. Purrhaps Rubble and this pawrent would not have gotten along. Purrhaps Rubble was better off with a different hooman. We cannot begin to understand the workings of the CDS, we just have to follow its rulings.

    these 2 9-week-old tuxedos, bringing us up to 42 domesticated cats. We try to adopt but many people don't meet either the credit requirements, the lease requirements, or the retention requirements that worked so well in 2019-2022.

His sister had passed away about a month before that and lo and behold, one morning I checked the shelter website and there was another orange female kitten. I couldn't believe it. I called the shelter and asked if she was

    available and they said yes and put her on hold for me. I drove down and the volunteer I talked to apologized and told me there was a clerical error and the kitten I wanted was already adopted.

    "But," she said, "Someone adopted her sister and then never came to get her. The rest are going home today, do you want that one instead?" They gave her to me for half off the normal adoption fee. She was the biggest and quietest one in the litter which is saying nothing at all because she's the loudest cat I have ever owned. But I love her desperately.
